When posting, I'm getting a long, complicated message about
something is deprecated. (regrettably I can't C&P the error
message in this ancient reader.)

The article is posted OK but is not cleared from my Outbox.

I also have that.

Could it be "experimental" rather than "deprecated"?

No, it's really "deprecated".

I'm working on this.

Better now, thanks, Ray.

Much better. This is the full message:

WARNING: The key derivation method "opensslv1" is deprecated. Using -pbkdf=>'pbkdf2' would be better.
Pass -nodeprecate=>1 to inhibit this message.
at /usr/local/newsservers/lib/NNRPDFilter.pm line 232.

The funny thing is that this has been working for 15 years without a hitch.
The latest version of the Perl Crypt-CBC module has now marked this option
as deprecated, but still uses it as the default and issues a warning for it.

Embedded Perl modules, however, are not supposed to write anything to STDOUT
that is not part of the NNTP protocol, because that confuses newsreaders.

I realize that this doesn't mean much to you, but I still wanted to let you know ;-)

Thanks again, Ray; it's all magic to me, as I'm sure you realise. ≈:o)

I appreciate this explanation because it wasn't clear to me that it wasn't
on my end.

I had a beginners problem with Perl around 25 years ago and subscribed
to the Perl Newsgroup so I could post a question. Luckily I looked at
the recent messages before posting, there was an absolute flame war
going on at the time. In the end I found my answer somewhere else and
eventually unsubscribed without having raised my head over the parapet
(the flame war had intensified).
Once I had my module working I abandoned the language and never went back.
